I really love comics. Unfortunately they usually lack a lot of dept. It’s always about the black and white, the good or evil and there seems to be missing a grey area in most of them. They never look at the big picture or implement something sociological or philosophical and when they do it’s usually about something small. Something that you could figure out yourself and something that can be grasped as an idea by all ages. As a marketer I suspect it to be because of the marketing revolving the comics to grasp a big as possible audience. Yet I find it disappointing never to for example look at the deeper aspect of things to understand the villain as much as the hero and see they are both equally as good in their own way looking at their life history. Usually there is a hero that never dies or even gets hurt and when then there is the villain, he get’s pulverized and avenged upon no questions asked about the mindset, the justification or the actions suggested and enacted. Giving and creating a whole generation of people conditioned once more from childhood with a set and narrow mindset and look on things.
That’s why I love manga’s the most and even better than comics. There are a lot of different kind of manga’s but the popular ones like one piece, naruto, bleach, … are written by and for young adults and adults. Not only do they give another perspective on things they aren’t scared to shock and offend to jolt the mind. They enable and motivate the audience and readers to see the bigger picture, see the depth of the sociological and philosophical matter and motivate further thinking.
As an example I have listed a few quotes which I love a lot coming from different series. Hopefully they can inspire you like they did me. Yet seeing and hearing them in the manga or anime itself usually gives a lot more impact of emotion combined with the story setting, story development, action and music.
#5 Aldnoah Zero
“What does it take to end a war? Is it if both sides wish for peace and set aside their hatred? No, warfare is nothing but a means of negotiation between states. Wars break out even when there is no hatred. Territory, resources or interests that you are determined to own. Ideology, religion, pride. Wars are fought over those objectives all the time. Meaning that when those objectives are met, the war will end. That or the war will end when the human cost outweighs the gains. Anger and hatred, those are nothing more than tools to tilt a war in your favor.”
#4 Hunter x Hunter: Ging to Gon
“You should enjoy the little detours. To the fullest. Because that’s where you’ll find the things more important than what you want.”
#3 Naruto: Pain/nagato talking to Naruto
“We are but men, drawn to act in the name of revenge we deem to be “justice”. But when we call our vengeance “justice”, it only breeds more revenge … forging the first link in the chains of hatred.”
“Remember this well. There are two kind of fights. As long as we place ourselves in battle, we must always know the difference: fights to defend life… and fights to defend pride…”
#1 Naruto: Itachi talking to Sasuke
“People live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true. That’s how they define “reality”. But what does it mean to be “correct” or “true”? Merely vague concepts… their “reality” may all be a mirage. Can we consider them to simply be living in their own world, shaped by their beliefs?
